One Night One Cause 2016 Highlights

Over twelve years ago I said “yes” to the offer to join BGCHM as the new General Director.

The day I said yes, I really didn’t know what I was saying yes to.

I knew that my grandfather and my uncle had been key players in this work for many years.  I knew that when I had visited India the previous year, it had impacted my life greatly.  It would be impossible for me to tell you all of the things we have seen over the last twelve years.  There have been many high moments and many low moments.  Most of the time I have wondered if I was the right guy for the job, but not one time have I wondered if this place was near to the heart of God and not one time have I doubted that God is big enough to care for these precious kids.

During the past couple of months, I have once again been reminded that all of this is much bigger than me and that my best strategy is to just trust in the one who sees the beginning from the end.

As many of you know, we are currently in the middle of a large capital campaign (Firm Foundations) seeking to raise enough money to renovate our campus and get it as strong as possible for the years to come.

We are tearing down old buildings, rebuilding some buildings and starting over with others.

It is a large project, but we are excited about what this means for the future of BGCH.  For the past six months I have been travelling all over the country promoting this project.  We have had many great meetings with many wonderful partners and potential partners of our home.  Our goal is to raise $500,000 for the campus improvement project.  As of about three weeks ago we had raised around $50,000.  We have been encouraged by the generosity of many of you and we felt like we were off to a good start.  As fall approached, we were excited to take this momentum into our annual benefit event in Russellville that we call One Night One Cause.

Several weeks prior to the event we received an email from a man we had never met and honestly we had never even heard his name.

He was writing to ask if we were in any way connected to the missionary work from the late 1800s started by Albert and Mary Norton.  We responded to his email and let him know that indeed we were a product of the Norton’s work and that we now operated under the name of Boys and Girls Christian Home.  The next few weeks proved to be unlike anything we have seen in the last twelve years.  As it turns out, this email had come from a great grandson of Albert and Mary.

Over the next couple of weeks, we had much communication with our new friend, Mr. Charles “Norton” Shepard.   As we began to connect the history and the stories, Chuck decided he wanted to attend our One Night One Cause event.  All of the details were arranged and he flew into Little Rock the night before the event.  The next day we spent time getting acquainted and connecting the dots that made up 120 years of Norton and Palmer history and the work that had been started by Albert and Mary so many years ago.

I am beyond blessed to be able to share with you that during the event, Chuck joined me on stage and announced that he would be donating $150,000 towards the Firm Foundations project.

We were blown away to say the least.  Once again we have seen that God is big enough.  We are only called to be faithful to tell the story and watch what God can do.
This gift, along with the generous and sacrificial gifts of our faithful supporters and the countless work hours of our amazing volunteers, enabled this year’s benefit  to raise over $190,000 for the needs of BGCH! We thank God always for His faithful provision in His perfect time.

Thank you for your prayers for this event and for your heart for our children.

We are so very grateful for you all!
Today I only tell this story to give glory to an Almighty God who has done the unexplainable.  Something like this could never be put together by us.  Most of this story didn’t even involve us.  It was just God doing what He does.  We saw Him move pieces and work in ways that you cannot explain.  I trust that you will be encouraged by this and that your faith will be strengthened along with ours.

Miracles in Mason Jars

How many miracles can YOUR Mason jar hold? At One Night One Cause 2016, the vision was cast and the challenge was given to take a whole year and see how many times we can fill a mason jar with the pocket change. The point is to take what so many of us take for...

Update on the Home of Peace

If you were to ever have the privilege of walking through the front gates of our campus, one of the first buildings your eyes would see is an unassuming structure tucked quietly off to the right of the campus. This is our Home of Peace. It was built in 1999 to...
